You know how you often see quinoa burger patties or healthy vegan vegetarian burger patties recipe floating around and wonder if they are tasty or not? Well today I finally decided to give these recipes a test. We were definitely pleasantly surprised by how good it turned out to be!
Cheese and Sun dried Tomato Red Quinoa Burger PattiesImagine the meat eating Husband saying that these vegetarian patties are good. He even brought them to work the following day for lunch! In this recipe I used Red Quinoa but you can definitely use any type of Quinoa. Well actually I think you can use any grains, such as bulgur or couscous to make these. Considering how difficult it is to get your hands on quinoa these days, especially here in Germany.

These patties are crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The cheese definitely helped ;) They are very tasty with Tzatziki, a Greek sauce with yoghurt, garlic, cucumber, olive oil, salt and pepper. I made this most basic combination of ingredients but you can definitely find better and fancier recipes for homemade Tzatziki. But hey, the star of the dish is the quinoa patties! As long as you have some sort of sauce to go with it.

Makes 9 patties

1 1/2 cup Red Quinoa ( or quinoa of your choice)
3 cups vegetable broth

1 small onion, chopped
handful of parsley, finely chopped
1/2 chili, finely chopped
5 tbs flour
1 cup cheese of your choice ( I use mixed cheese for gratin)
1 egg
1 tsp garlic powder
2 sun dried tomatoes
oil (enough to shallow fry)


Prepare quinoa according to box. OR the steps below

Wash quinoa in a fine mash strainer with water. (To rinse the bitter coating around the seed!)

In a small pot, add washed quinoa and vegetable broth. Bring to boil, string occasionally.

Lower to a simmer for 15mins (about time when the water is absorbed).

Remove from heat and fluff it with a fork. Let it cool to room temperature.

( In case the quinoa is cooked, but there are still water left, remove the water and let it cool)

Burger patties 

Mix all ingredients in a bowl*.

Divide mixture into 9 patties and set aside. (or however big or small you like)

Add enough oil to a pan for to shallow fry, then heat the pan on medium high heat. (add a little of the mixture to the pan to test the heat of the oil, if the mixture sizzles, you are ready to start frying!)

Add the patties to the pan and shallow fry for about 2-3mins each side till golden brown( make sure to not overcrowd the pan)

Remove and place on kitchen towel to remove excess oil.

Serve with greek yoghurt or tzatziki!

* If you find the mixture a little too dry, mixture won’t stick together, you could add a little oil to it.

* If however you find the patties a little too wet, you could add some breadcrumbs.
