recipe: Sloppy Joe

Posted on Sep 5 2013 - 5:30pm by The Husband

Have you ever tried Sloppy Joe before? Well technically we have not until we found a couple of recipes online. We invited two friends over for dinner who helped us making Sloppy Joe’s and homemade Coleslaw. Of course we didn’t stop there! We decided to even make our own burger buns as well.

Sloppy Joe's recipe

Let me first explain that it is really difficult to make something that you have not tried yourself. As it turned out our Sloppy Joe was actually not sweet enough. So we are actually going to adjust the recipe a bit to improve the taste for you.

Proof that we made the burger buns as well (picture below) but we were not satisfied with the result of the burger buns, and are going to search for a better recipe! So keep a look out in the future.

The Coleslaw is a very simple recipe that you should all try at home. It is really simple and if you are quick with the knife you can make all this within 10-15 minutes.

Ok here is what you need:
– 1 cup of mayonnaise
– half a cup of mustard
– juice of a half a lemon
– a pinch of salt
– a pinch of pepper
– half a white cabbage
– two carrots
So how do you do it?
Well we don’t think we need bullet points or a list of what to do here. So how does it work? Just cut the cabbage and the carrot into small pieces as you can see on the picture bellow. Then take all the other ingredients and mix it using your hands. Leave the Coleslaw in the fridge for 30 minutes. That will make it taste a lot better.

Ok now let us move on to the Sloppy Joe. First we start with the stuff you are going to need.

Ingredients:
– 500 gr of minced beef
– 1 chopped red onion
– 1 chopped green paprika
– 1 clove of minced garlic
– 1 cup of ketchup
– 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
– a pinch of salt
– a pinch of pepper

Ok now let us go for the very difficult part. How to cook the Sloppy Joe:
1) Fry all the ingredients on medium heat until the meat is browned and the vegetables are slightly soft
2) Add the other ingredients and simmer everything for 30 minutes.

Just assemble everything to your liking and don’t forget a lot of napkins.

I used to eat Sloppy Joes often back when I was in primary and secondary school, and loved how they were such fun food. I think it’s high time to re-live the experience as an adult. However, I never thought that coleslaw (which I really love) and Sloppy Joes would go together. I tend to have it either with a lean beef burger or fried chicken. When I think about it, it actually does make sense.

Looking forward to the burger bun recipe that you’ll post.

Hope you both had a pleasant weekend!

We were experimenting and discovered that Coleslaw is certainly a compliment to Sloppy Joes! Give it a try and let us know what you think!
Actually we are still searching for a burger bun recipe because the ones we made turned out to be more a weapon than food (pretty hard burger buns).
If you have any suggestions to try anything let us know. We will be more than willing to try new recipes.
